What happens when you blend the down-to-earth vibe of The Town with the natural wonders of the great outdoors? The Most Lit. Summer. Ever. Our overnight camp gives middle-school-aged youth plenty of opportunities to explore hiking trails, milk some goats, pick berries from a local farm, sleep under the stars, read their favorite book in a tree and discover strengths they never knew they had. By the time our campers finish the experience, many say they feel like they’ve been transported to another dimension—a place where they can be themselves, an opportunity to escape what they’re normally exposed to in life and a way to feel connected with Mother Nature and their community like never before.

Meet "Master Chief"
Jerry, aka “Master Chief,” was in fifth grade when he first heard about Camp Phoenix. He had been camping before. But when his teacher told the class about an overnight summer camp that let teens sleep under the stars and learn how to be more independent, Jerry felt the leader in him awaken. When he got to camp, he said his mind was blown because he got to do all the activities his teacher told him about and more—and he found a tribe of friends that loved exploring the same things. His favorite activity that summer was taking part in a cooking contest. “It was fun because, in my group, we had to come to a consensus and not leave anyone’s idea behind.” Jerry said Camp Phoenix was life-changing for him and the camp gave him a summer experience that he would not have been able to create on his own. “Without Camp Phoenix, I would have had to go to work with my mom every day in the summer, and it would have been boring to sit in an office for eight hours each day. Camp Phoenix taught me new things and it boosted my confidence.”

Some of our counselors were Camp Phoenix campers themselves when they were in middle school. That means that, when our campers need a little nudge to go outside their comfort zone or when they need a shoulder to cry on, our staff knows exactly how to meet their needs. Nothing makes us happier than showing a young camper how to reach their potential.

Family Day
During the annual Family Day at camp, parents and siblings arrive in San Gregorio to joyous embraces. After families share potluck dishes and meet their kids’ new friends and counselors, the day culminates with a camper-led talent show. Even some of the most shy campers dance, read poetry and sing. Eighth-grade “flock leaders” share the outcomes of their leadership projects, solutions they have designed to enhance the camp experience. Camp Phoenix parents are proud and excited by what camp has meant to their kids.

“Attending Camp Phoenix was well worth it for my daughter. At first, I was a little skeptical because of the thought of my daughter being away from home for several weeks. But my husband attended overnight camps growing up and he was also in the military. So he made me feel comfortable with the idea that being away from home would be a great experience for my daughter—and it was. My daughter formed necessary relationships with the counselors who provided her with a strong support system. She was able to express her feelings and problem-solve.
